Yoda, who was born on March 31, 1934, in Tokyo, first attended Keio University to study law before deciding to go to America to pursue an acting career. He later enrolled at USC and responded to a casting call from MGM for a performer who could speak both English and Japanese well.

His breakout performance was in the 1962 military drama The Horizontal Lieutenant, which led to his subsequent inclusion in McHale’s Navy.
